The Center for Dance and Body offers a wide range of dance and fitness classes. Each class, for amateurs, pre-professionals, and professionals alike, takes place in an atmosphere of serious purpose, concentration on physical improvement, personal care and attention, and a sense of joy and musicality. We offer private instruction in addition to classes. Custom-designed training, in particular audition preparation for pre-professional schools, are special features of the curriculum.
Anna Lederfeind, Director
Originally from Belgium, Anna began dancing at age seven at the Conservatoire de la Danse directed by Maurice Béjart, and studied with Jacques Saussin and Dolores Laga. She danced the lead role in Theatre Royal de la Monnaie's production of Dream at age ten. She attended The Royal Ballet School in London, then was chosen to study with Nikita Gsovsky at the School of Academic Russian Ballet in Hamburg. Anna has performed as a principal dancer for Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, and at Royal Theaters in Aachen, Lubeck and Hamburg. In New York, Anna trained with Nenette Charisse and Lee Theodore of the American Dance Machine. Anna has been a guest ballet teacher for pre-professionals at The Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance as well as teaching Master classes in basic ballet in other schools. Additionally, Ms. Lederfeind is an ABT® (American Ballet Theatre) Certified Teacher, having successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensives in Primary through Level 7 and Partnering of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.
In 2005 Anna became the Associate Director of AYDT (American Youth Dance Theater) in New York City. In addition to teaching, she is responsible for the design and overall instruction of the Graded Ballet program and Broadway Dance syllabi.
As a lifelong dance professional, Anna also founded CDAB (Center for Dance and Body) as a way to make the artistry and athleticism of dance accessible to adults, both professionals and non-professionals. She works closely with each student using hands-on personalized placement to show correct positions and mechanics, prevent injury, and to build self-confidence with personal expression. In her popular class Body Ballet®, she uses the authentic French Barre à terre (floor barre) that comprises exercises used as a conditioning tool to prepare the body for the demands of classical ballet.
Anna's background and teaching includes the three basic academic methods that comprise the classical syllabus; French School, Cecchetti, and the classical Russian technique of the Kirov based on the teachings of Alexander Pushkin - Anna teaches a class for professionals with a “technique de base” approach which helps do away with bad habits and reinforces dynamics and coordination as tools for confident technique in getting dancers ready for all styles of choreography.
